Our Language Stay in Worthing
Worthing is a seaside town located in West Sussex, England. I will give you a small insight in what we have seen and learned in this exciting fortnight. One thing I can tell you straight-away is: it is true that the weather in England is windy, cloudy and cold.
After our one-hour flight from Zürich to London we climbed into a bus that took us to Worthing. By the time we spotted the traffic-signs “Worthing” the tension grew and the students were getting more active again. Finally, we arrived at the town-center and were very kindly greeted by our host families. As we already expected, most of us got offered a cup of tea that night.
The next day was the first day of school. In the morning we received various information and were parted into two classes whereas in the afternoon we went on a walk around town. We discovered that Worthing has a typical English flair with its colourful, small houses and friendly people. The habitants of Worthing are proud of their pier, giving you a stunning view onto the sea and to be the owners of one of the oldest, working cinemas.
As I mentioned, the weather was rather cold and windy. Yet the people we came across, were walking their dogs in T-shirts and shorts while we were freezing in our winter coats.
The next few days flew by and we were looking forward to the weekend, where we would go on a trip to London. But on Thursday we received bad news: there would be a national train strike and therefore the trip was cancelled. We were quite dejected, not being able to see London. Now we could spend the weekend as we wanted. Although London was cancelled, I think we all had a great weekend. Some of us, for example, took advantage of the low prices compared to Switzerland and took a Limousine to Brighton.
In the second half of our Language stay we were able to reschedule the trip to London for the upcoming Friday. On the very morning we gathered by the train station and travelled to London. There we walked around the city and also had some free time, which we were allowed to spend at leisure. On the ride back to Worthing our luggage has gotten heavier and our camera rolls have been filled with new pictures.
The next day it was time for us to pack our things and say goodbye to Worthing and our host families. We managed to return home safely on our own.
Whether it was because of the low prices in the UK or because of the English we learned, everyone could profit in these two weeks. What astonished me most was, that there is not a time during the day where you cannot drink a cup of tea.
